Mating Claire Excerpt

“Is the dog going to be alright back there?” She turned to frown at the mutt as she slid into her seat. The retriever had two paws up on the edge of the truck and was sniffing the air.

“Who? Duke?” Derek glanced back at the hound. “He’ll be fine.”

“Duke?” Claire remembered Derek calling the dog that earlier. The connection had not hit her then. “You named him after the dog in the baked bean commercials?”

“Hey,” Derek shot her a warning look. “I like those baked beans.”

“Talk about a lack of creativity.”

“Oh?” He raised an eyebrow at her. “What would you have named him?”

“I don’t know. It depends on his personality.”

“Excuse me?”

“Well you can’t just name an animal without knowing them. The name reflects the inner spirit of the animal.” Claire scowled as he began to chuckle. She should never have bothered to talk to him. “Never mind.”

“He’s a dog. He likes his ears scratched, his belly rubbed, a bone now and again. He loves to chase balls, and occasionally he licks himself. That’s Duke’s inner spirit.”

“I see you two have a lot in common.”

“I like to have more than my belly rubbed, thank you very much,” Derek responded seriously.

“That’s nice.” Claire said crisply.

“And I like women to do the lick—”

“Thank you!” Claire drowned out his dry tone. “That’s enough.”

“Hey you started it.”

“And I’m ending it.”

“Would you prefer I show you what I like to have licked?” Derek asked innocently enough.

Instinctively Claire’s eyes dropped to the bulge pressing against his black, uniform trousers. It looked huge, appeared to grow even larger before her eyes.

“Should I take that look as a yes?”
